New
Republic Defender

The New Republic Defender is interesting in the fact that it is
similar to the concept of the TIE Line Fighter; cut all excess
equipment to get superior maneuverability, good speed, and low
cost. Did the rebels learn something after six years of galactic
civil war? In any case, the Defender is mostly used for planetary
defense, but has steadily become more and more numerous in the
Republic navy as well, mainly replacing the old Y-Wings and Z-95s.
We believe that the NR Defender design was derived from the Imperial
Death Star Defender, due to it's amazing similarity.
The Defenders greatest asset is
the ease with which it can perform exceptional maneuvers. It can
spin around 180 degrees in mid-flight in the vacuum of space by
simply firing one maneuvering jet forward and one backward, so
watch out for return fire. It is not very fast however, so missiles
is the best bet to kill it. A tractor beam is very useful for
battling a Defender as well. |

Interceptor. Faster, more maneuverable and with greater firepower
than the standard TIE Fighter by using technology from the TIE
Advanced. One of the Empire's best dogfighters. These interceptors
were designed so that the wings are longer in front than behind
and have been cut out at the front, all for better visibility.
They have been timed at 1,250 kilometers per hour in atmospheric
conditions. |

Interceptor. A mediocre multi-role craft. Small, fast and maneuverable,
it is inexpensive and therefore a favorite of smugglers and pirates.
The T-Wing never gained much acceptance among Rebel or Imperial
pilots, though. Although it is fast, it's only armed with two
laser cannons and equipped with weak shielding. The T-Wing has
three wings, with one engine mounted on each wingtip. |

Space superiority fighter. The Z-95 Headhunter was one of the
most popular starfighters ever. It was designed by Seti Ashgad
before the rise of the Empire, and was available for sale for
over 30 years. Most militaries with starfighters used Z-95s at
one point, and the Z-95 was the ship of choice for pirates and
mercenaries, especially when the X-Wing became common among Rebel
pilots. The ship was easily modifiable, and thus ships that were
adapted for space travel (including hyperdrive-equipped Z-95s)
soon appeared. Incom and Subpro, the Z-95's manufacturers, also
updated the ship every year. Thus, a variety of different Headhunters
exist. The Z-95-AF4 was one of the last Z-95s and includes modern
(at the time) weapons and upgraded computer systems. Some Z-95
designs have been clocked at 1,150 kilometers per hour in an atmosphere.

The Corsair is a rarely seen ship. Unlike most starfighters, it
requires a crew of three. The co-pilot controls the ion cannons
and one gunner operates the turbolasers. It is unusual for a heavy
assault fighter to not carry any warheads, but it carries light
turbolaser batteries to make up for it. In some planetary navies,
which uses the much different civilian classification of capital
ships, the Corsair is listed as a Cruiser. |

Starhammer

|
TL-118, aka StarHammer, was developed during the height of the
Galactic Civil War. Subpro planned to market the starship to either
the rebels or the Empire, whichever bid the highest. The Empire
rejected the design, and the rebels couldn't afford it, so Subpro
sold its first and only production run to anyone willing to pay
for the fighters, including security forces, system militias,
planetary defense fleets, mercenaries, and crime lords.
Aside from being a large, slow
target, the StarHammer suffer from a major weakness which was
one of the reasons the Empire rejected the design. One successful
strike against the ion engines causes them to emit maximum thrust,
sending the fighter out of control in the general direction it
was travelling. |

Heavy attack fighter. Good multi-role craft. Standard Imperial
fighter for attacks on enemy capital ships and bases. This version
of the TIE Fighter is a double-hulled bomber ship with bent wings
for increased stability. It suffers in maneuverability due to
its double-hulled configuration, but when complemented by TIE
Fighters or TIE Interceptors, it makes a lethal combination. These
ships eventually evolved into the TIE Scimitar assault bomber. |

Heavy assault starfighter. Except for a sturdier hull, it is inferior
to the X-Wing in every way. Commonly used by pirates and bounty
hunters. The Preybird is a rare form of SoroSuub combat starship
and was produced in extremely limited quantities. SoroSuub shut
the project down after producing only a few production models.
The design was eventually picked up by the remnants of the Empire
under Moff Disra, who turned the plans over to Zothip and the
Cavrilhu pirates. The Cavrilhu then began mass-producing the ships
for Disra, who bypassed normal Imperial channels to fund the ships.
Over time, the Preybird eventually replaced the TIE Fighter, because
it was cheaper to obtain them from pirates than from official
Imperial channels. |

propelled by four Incom 6X4 fusial thRUst engines. Some versions
does not have all weapons listed.

Designed by Alliance General Jan Dodonna and Victory-class designer
Walex Blissex, the A-wing was among the fastest starfighters in
use at the time of the Battle of Endor. The fighter is especially
compact, allowing for excellent excelleration and maneuverability,
but this leaves its internal systems especially vulnerable.
According to X-Wing: The Bacta War,
A-wings were not mass-produced, but rather built individually
at different locations, leading to minor variations in each fighter.
The New Republic might have set up A-wing factories later on,
however.
Some sources say that the A-wing
was designed in response to the Battle of Yavin, but the X-wing
books state that Dodonna was captured just after that battle.(Source:

Heavy attack fighter. Before the X-Wing, the Alliance had the
Koensayr Y-Wing. This ship was aging at the time of the Battle
of Yavin, and was a contemporary of the discontinued Z-95 Headhunter.
The Y-Wing had a decent speed when it was released, but is now
considered slow when compared with the swift X-Wing and the blindingly-fast
A-wing. The Y-Wing is a strong, multi-role craft and the most
versatile of all Alliance fighters. Its ion cannons allow disabling
of enemy vessels. Many Y-Wing configurations exist. The BTL-A4
(sometimes referred to as the "Longprobe"), used in
the Battle of Yavin, is a one-person fighter and carries extra
sensors. The BTL-S3 requires a crew of two persons; a pilot and
gunner. |

This starfighter, which employs the R7 astromech droid, was the
first starfighter to be fully designed and built under the auspices
of the New Republic, and was created by FreiTek Incorporated.
The ship, while visually like the X-Wing, has a pair of stable
wings. It dishes out punishment and can take it equally well.
It uses the R7 droid to take advantage of a redesigned hyperdrive
system. The weapons systems leave something to be desired, being
based on a synthetic Tibanna gas that isn't as good as the real
thing. The New Republic employed two models of the E-Wing. The
basic A-Model is 11.2 meters in length, and is armed with three
heavy blaster cannons and a proton torpedo launcher. The B-Model
is nearly identical to the A-model, except that Mon Calamarian
techs have tripled the power input to the weapons systems. This
makes them extremely powerful, but if the couplings fail and the
weapons overheat, they can be extremely dangerous. |

Space superiority fighter. Excellent multi-role craft derived
from Lord Vader's (and some elite empire squadrons) TIE Advanced

it made the production limited and as SFS couldn't bring the costs
down, the Empire chose the TIE Interceptor which has nearly as
good performance, but no hyperdrive or deflector shields. As the
TIE Advanced actually evolved into the cheaper TIE Interceptor,
there are very few TIE's of this type still in use. |

Space superiority fighter. Excellent multi-role craft. Since its
introduction, it has become the mainstay fighter of the Rebel
Fleet. It is extremely maneuverable, even at its top sublight
speed of 100 MGLT. It has also been clocked at 1,050 kilometers
per hour in an atmosphere. The X-Wing was designed by Incom just
before the Empire stopped contracting out naval constRUction.
The Empire believed that Incom was infiltrated by Alliance sympathizers,
and relieved the X-Wing team of duty. The X-Wing team then defected
to the Alliance, flying out with all the X-Wing prototypes and
the starfighter's plans. Their parting gesture to the Empire was
to destroy all records of the X-Wing in Incom and Imperial databases.
The Alliance then began to produce the X-Wing themselves, recognizing
its potential.
FYI, the X-Wing used in X-Wing Alliance
is the second version developed by Incom Corp and has improved
(sublight) speed. Even later versions had sensors, improved shielding,
further improved sublight speed and even eliminated the requirement
of an astromech droid due to enhanced navigational computers. |

Defense/patrol blastboat. Primarily used as a patrol or assault
gunship, serving well on fleet point missions with or without
support. The GAT-12h was introduced shortly before the Battle
of Yavin, and was not immediately purchased by the Empire. So,
Sienar Fleet Systems began selling them on the open market, where
they were snapped up quickly by pirate and mercenary fleets. They
never became as popular as TIE Fighters, and became obsolete in
the mind of the Empire. The S/B has rear-mounted engines, and
a ventral fin for stability.
More designs of this assault fighter
was developed, including the GAT-12j introduced shortly after
the death of Emperor Palpatine. This third generation of the blastboat
had larger ammunition bays for its missiles, allowing 12 proton
torpedoes or 18 concussion missiles. |

Heavy assault fighter. Much improved combat ability makes this
an excellent replacement for the Y-Wing. The B-Wing (B stands
for "Blade") itself was originally conceived as a way
for the Alliance to attack enemy capital ships without using their
own capital ships. The B-Wing's strange design make the fighter
look like a flying cross, with the control pod at the top, retractable
wings at the sides, and laser guns at the top and bottom. Finally,
the stardrive is located at the center of the cross. The whole
ship end up flying sideways. The B-Wing was originally designed
without a hyperdrive, but was later modified to include one. This
assault fighter can make 960 kilometers per hour in the atmosphere
and was designed by Commander Ackbar (later an Admiral) and the
Verpine hive colonies Slayn and Korpil. It was introduced shortly
before the Battle of Endor |

Advanced superiority fighter. Quick, heavily-armed and complete
with a hyperdrive, this deadly design can engage multiple enemy
fighters. The fighter is propelled by the newer P-sz9.7 twin ion
engines from Sienar Fleet Systems and equipped with Novaldex shield
generators. The TIE Defender cost over 300,000 credits/fighter;
about five times the cost of a TIE Interceptor. This, plus the
political upheaval created by the Battle of Endor and the fact
that it had an aft blindspot created by the wing placement, led
to the demise of the TIE Defender as a widely-accepted starfighter.
The TIE Defender was used to defeat Admiral Zaarin, although the
missions were so secret that very few Imperial officials were
unaware of its role. |

The nickname "Phantom" for this fighter originates from
the codename of the Mrlssi project to develop a working cloaking
device for the Empire. The official devloper of this device was
Rorax Falken and his Mrlssi students. It is said that this was
only a smoke-screen to use Empire funding for other projects under
Falken's control and that this fact wasn't noticed under Emperor
Palpatine's reign. As Palpatine died, remnants of the Empire began
demanding results from Falken. The researcher was just starting
to realize how this work had been used in the constRUction of
the Death Star by that time and suffered a breakdown. When all
was said and done, Rogue Squadron discovered (from Falken's students)
that the project wasn't real. In the end, the only good about
this project, which was RUmoured to even give the ship the ability
to resist the effects of a gravity well projector, was that it
lead to the discovery of the gravitic polarization beam. |
