lectricity from Photovoltaics 
can play a leading role in the future of sustainable energy supply. A barrier to PV is the lack of standardised products that can be easily incorporated into mainstream design and building. Of course the cost of PV energy is still the main issue being tackled and improved!

Newington Solar Village 79 houses have PV Solar Tile roofs.
However, when all added value of 'PV-building' is recognised, energy from PVs incorporated into electricity grids can make suburbs the power stations of the future, free of emissions, socially acceptable and an asset to property and communities alike. Real cost/benefits can then be seen in comparison to coal based electricity.

Tiles
utilise the strength and durability of standard production toughened glass PV laminates to form a solar power roof surface, adding minimal, long service life materials in the framing. Vulnerable glass edges are protected by a Santoprene gasket, protected in turn by a durable frame.
Side frame elements of each tile are box sections giving strength and rigidity to the laminate.

Tiles are joined side to side on the roof by a coverstrip that is TEK screwed to the roof battens, fastening each tile in up to 8 locations. Wind lift off testing has been done for all Australian conditions.
Transverse batten supports span the rear surface of each tile and are snap attached to the side frames and are adjustable in position to support the PV laminate directly onto roof battens making the laminate trafficable.

Internal roof condensate can run off the tile rear surface to the outside.
Many design features developed from the science and art of roofing and experience with the application of PV tiles in roofs have been incorporated to arrive at an easy and reliably producable product that is patent protected.
The Solar Tile frame is designed for mass production assembly with PV laminates. Minimised aluminium content combined with durable plastic parts are used to create a lower embodied energy, encapsulating frame that protects the PV in shipping, handling and installation. Valuable thermal energy can be collected with this method of installation for PV/Thermal co-generation. Cost savings in materials, labour, maintenance, improved performance and better aesthetics are all some of the added value gains from a Solar Tile approach to in-roof PV.
