Dudcon 3, 49th Australian National Science Fiction Convention, 2nd - 6th September 2010*
Ditmar Information and FAQ
The Ditmars (AKA Australian SF ("Ditmar") Award, and "Australian Science Fiction Achievement Award") are the Australian version of the Hugo awards. They are a popular award, nominated by the SF community at large and voted on by the memberships of the current and previous Australian National Conventions. They are named after Martin James Ditmar (Dick) Jenssen, who came up with the idea and supported them financially for many years. In 2002 Dick Jenssen became the only person to win a major award named after himself. General information on the Ditmar nominating and voting procedures can be found here
The Ditmar award ceremony will be held at 7pm on Friday, September 3rd at Aussiecon 4.
The nomination period for the Ditmars has now closed and the voting has commenced. Congratulations to all of the nominees
The official ballot paper, including postal address information, may be downloaded as a PDF format file from: here
Votes can be sent via email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Online voting will be available shortly, at http://ditmars.sf.org.au/2010
Postal ballots will be distributed by the Ditmar Subcommittee in the near future.
Voting for the Ditmar Award is conducted in accordance with the rules specified at http://wiki.sf.org.au/Ditmar_rules, and is open to members of Dudcon III (including supporting members) and to members of Conjecture who were eligible to vote in the 2009 Award. Voting in all award categories is by the optional preferential system (see for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optional_Preferential_Voting), and each eligible individual may vote only once. All ballots (including emailed ballots) should include the name and address of the voter. If you have questions regarding the ballot or voting procedure, please email email@example.com.
Do I need to be Australian to vote in the Ditmars?
No. Any members of the 2010 (Dudcon) or 2009 (Conjecture) National conventions are eligible to vote.
Will my Dudcon membership allow me to vote in the 2011 Ditmars?
Yes, it is a two for one deal to ensure a large pool of voters. A Dudcon membership is also likely to be the cheapest way to vote for the 2011 Ditmars.
Should I vote if I don't know who any of the people are, or only know one of the nominees?
This is up to you. Although many people confuse a popular voted award with a popularity award it is meant to reward excellence rather than coolness. It would be best if you try and familiarise yourself with the nominees in the categories in which you intend to vote (you aren't required to vote in all of the categories).
Will there be any other awards?
There will be one Special Award of the convention for which Dudcon members will be eligible to nominate and vote.
