DRC committee members, staff, and DRC members are involved in a number of campaigns, and everyone is welcome to become involved. Details of the accessible housing campaign and the accessible public transport campaign are given below.
Access to Housing
A major recent campaign has been the access to housing campaign, a campaign initiated by Katrina Newman and the community committee Disability Action Southeast. They played a leading role in organizing an accessible housing forum which was held on 18th May 2009, and an accessible housing survey.
Accessible Housing ForumThis forum on promoting access to housing was held 18th May 2009: 11am-2pm, City of Casey Council Chambers, Magid Drive, Narre Warren. See the Accessible Housing Forum flyer for more details. The PowerPoint presentations from the forum of Bernd Bartl and Bill Lawler are available here.
Accessible Housing Survey
Can you drop in for a cuppa and a chat? Are you a person affected by the inability to visit family or friends due to a lack of access?
If so, please help and complete our survey (Word document) and send to the Disability Resources Centre 186 Foster Street East, Dandenong 3175 or email to firstname.lastname@example.org. If you can not access the internet to download a survey please call Katrina Newman on 9791 4870 to receive your copy in the post. Here is a chance to stand up, be counted and help begin to break down the barriers.
Accessible Transport Watch
From 2007-09 the DRC assisted VCOSS with running a project called Accessible Transport Watch. In this project a detailed survey was completed by people with disabilities in Melbourne and regional Victoria about their experiences of the accessibility of train, bus and tram services in their region, and they were encouraged to be involved with lobbying efforts to improve access. The resulting report of the Accessible Public Transport Watch Project published the results of a survey of 115 people with disability and identified numerous access problems in the public transport system.
The DRC used to have its own radio program "Rocking the Boat", but gave over its time-slot to a new disability show "The Boldness", a half hour program run by Grit Media on the third and fifth (if there is one) Wednesday of every month at 6pm, on 3CR Community Radio: 855 kHz AM. In the Green Guide the program appears under the broader heading "Raise the Roof".
The 3 programs that share the Wednesday 6pm-6.30pm 3CR timeslot with "The Boldness" are:Raising Our Voices. Produced and presented by people with disabilities and covers issues such as housing, discrimination, difficulties with public transport, self-advocacy and other related issues.
Housing for the Aged Action Group, presented by HAGG, show explores a range of housing issues.
Raise the Roof. Tenancy rights and issues presented by the Tenants Union.
